Yoga Therapy Training with Stephanie Quirk

Seeing & Understanding from the Base is a seven part Yoga Therapy Course which mirrors Guruji’s learning schema of beginning from the see-able observable outer form, through to the more subtle aspects of the mind and senses of perception. This series will be invaluable for teachers and trainee teachers to help them understand how to work with students with common issues and for experienced practitioners looking to deepen their practice and understanding of yoga.

This course is led by Stephanie Quirk who is a world leader in the field of Yoga Therapeutics. Stephanie spent 20 years living, studying and working with the Iyengar family at the Ramanani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, India. During this time Stephanie worked directly with the Iyengar’s in the medical classes, gaining extensive knowledge and experience with Yoga Therapy.

  • What is covered in the classes?

    The study begins at the already established base of the students own practice. Stephanie will then introduce participants to adaptions, modifications, and props that with assist participants with their own practice and for teachers / trainees assist students who attend their classes with commonly occurring problems and conditions.

  • How is the course structured?

    The course is a series of 7 study modules or parts. 1 or 2 parts will be scheduled each year until the 7 parts have been completed.

    Each part will be scheduled over 4 days and will be structured as follows:

    Days 1 to 3 (6 Classes)

    • 10am - 1pm (3 hours)

    • 3pm - 5.30pm (2 1/2 hours)

    Day 4 (2 Classes)

    • 9am - 12pm (3 hours)

    • 2pm - 4.30pm (2 1/2 hours)

  • What are the 7 Parts?

    Part 1 - The Karmendriyas 1 - The Outer Body Extended in Locomotion - Feet, Knees & Hips. Part 1 has already been held the 26th - 29th of August 2023 and recordings are available here.

    Part 2 - The Karmendriyas 2 - The Outer Body that Gestures Offers & Holds - Arms, Shoulders & the Upper Spine / Neck. Part 2 has already been held the 2nd - 5th of March 2024 and recordings are available here.

    Part 3 - The Base - The Lower Spine, Pelvis / Sacrum

    Part 4 The Energetic Embodiment 1 - Vitality the Work of Bring “Life” - Health of the Vital Organic Body including Heart, Lungs, Pancreas & Thyroid

    Part 5 - The Energetic Embodiment 2 - The Sustainer, Upholder & Maintainer of Life - The Body Responsible for the Holding & Retaining - Digestion, Absorbtion & Elimination

    Part 6 Acquiring the State of Balance & Harmony Systemic Imbalance - Imbalances that affect our entire being - Hyper / Hypo tension, Endocrine & of the Nervous System - When the nervous system over works or is in a state of deterioration and disorder

    Part 7 Listening & Seeing - Realising - the Senses of Perception & the Mind

  • What's covered in Day 1?

    Day 1 includes investigation through the categories of asanas taught in a general class for the subject / topic being explored.

  • What's covered in Day 2?

    The work commenced on day 1 continues in the morning session. In the afternoon the focus is on the very important aspect of observation.

  • What's covered in Day 3?

    Learning specific adjustments and adaptations for the students that require help. Adjustments can be carried out for a variety of reasons, to enable, to correct, and to educate the student, so that the pose works more directly and the effects are accessible for the student.

  • What's covered in Day 4?

    Adjustments and adaptations continue and the introduction to understanding the purpose and correct usage of props. Props as with adaptations can be for enabling, correcting and educating. They can alleviate situations difficult to bear as well as provide a portal for the student to understand their inner body.

  • Who can attend the class?

    This series represents a great professional development opportunity for teachers and teacher trainees. All Iyengar Yoga trainees and all certified Iyengar Yoga teachers are welcome, irrespective of level.

    The series is also suitable for experienced Iyengar Yoga practitioners who are looking to deepen their practice and understanding.

  • What duration will the series be run over?

    1 or 2 parts will be scheduled each year until the 7 parts have been completed. Part 1 was held in August 2023 and Part 2 is scheduled the 2nd to the 5th March 2024.

    The subject matter is very rich and students need an opportunity to digest, reflect and importantly put the learnings into practice.

  • Can I do the series online?

    Yes the series can be completed online.

    You can attend the classes live online. The classes will be streamed via Zoom and login details will be provided to students before the classes.

    All classes will be recorded, so students can also participate solely via the recordings. This will suit international students who are not within our time zone.

  • Are the in-studio spaces limited?

    Yes the in-studio spaces are limited, so if this is your preferred mode of learning, we recommend that you register as soon as possible.

  • How long will recordings be available for?

    Students will have access to the recorded classes for a period of 6 months.

    Stephanie’s teaching is very rich and this will enable students to replay the classes and importantly to start, stop and practice whilst viewing the recordings.

  • Has this series been run before?

    Yes Stephanie has travelled internationally for many years facilitating this program through out Europe, America and Asia. Students in many international locations have already completed the full series of training.

    This is the first time the training is being offered in Australia and the first time that it is available via online learning.

    Parts 3 is scheduled the 17th -20th of August 2024 and registrations will open soon.

  • How much does it cost?

    In-studio - AUD600

    Online - AUD500

    All classes will be recorded and students will have access to the recorded classes for a period of 6 months.

    We also have a studio rate which is suitable for a group of students from the same studio who would like to do the series together.

  • Can I attend in-studio classes if I have an injury?

    If you have a medical condition or injury you can join the in-studio classes providing you can participate (even if seated) for the duration of the classes.
